HARVEST
It’s best to pick wild plums from the branches because they split and bruise easily when they fall to the ground. But you shouldn’t have to tug: the fruit will almost fall into your hand when ripe. Wild American plums ripen in early summer. When they start dropping fruit, that is the time to go pick.
With their rosy exteriors and bright yellow, juicy pulp, wild plums are delicious raw but also make great jam and fruit leather.
PREPARE
The quality of wild plums varies from tree to tree. Some have a pleasant mix of sweet and tangy flavors and a deliciously juicy texture when eaten raw. Others may be less juicy and are better once cooked into a jam or made into fruit leather.
